How they compare
The pickup rate is how often another, independent origin reported the same event within 72 hours: how often a source's reports are borne out by others, not whether they are true. Every source and publisher with at least 10 decided reports, by tier. How it is worked out
The typical wire source or publisher is picked up most often (median 75%), the typical OSINT one least (median 52%); a tier with under 3 on the chart is not compared. Each dot is one source or publisher: the further right, the more of its reports someone independent also reported.
Not drawn: 2 alert and sensor feeds (Home Front Command alerts (via Tzeva Adom), Ajwa crowd reports (Lebanon)). Others seldom repeat each alert or reading, so a low rate says what they are, not how others follow them. They are in the table below.

How it works
How sources are labelled
Each source has a tier and a side, set by hand. The tier weighs a report: an event needs independent origins of enough weight to be corroborated, and an official source counts for its own side's actions. The side tells sources from opposing sides apart: two of them agreeing on a fact counts for more than two from one side.
- OfficialGovernments, militaries, ministries and UN bodies: reliable on their own actions, a party to the conflict on others'.
- WireReuters, AP, AFP and outlets with editorial verification.
- EstablishedNational and regional outlets with editorial standards and a known lean.

Publishers through news search. Articles found through Google News are weighed by the outlet that published them, not by the search feed: each publisher has its own tier and side, set by the editor, taken from the hand-written starting list, or rated automatically by AI when a new name first appears (an automatic rating never replaces the editor's). Their record is kept per origin: a publisher's own reports and other outlets' reports that name it as their source; its reports that relay another party count under that party.
Independent pickup rate
What it measures, the two windows, sample sizes
It is not a measure of accuracy. It is the share of a source's reports whose event another, independent origin also reported (before or after it), or that a sensor reading or an official record backs. A true report nobody else covered counts as not picked up; a false one that others repeated independently counts as picked up. It never changes a tier.
Each report is decided twice, by the same rules: within 72 hours (decided 72 hours after the site stored it) and within 7 days (decided 7 days after, so a report picked up on day 4 counts there). The 7-day rate covers only reports at least 7 days old, so it is shown beside the 72-hour rate of those same reports, and the gap between the two is the reports picked up after 72 hours; it is shown once 10 of a source's reports are that old. Reports already older than 7 days when the second decision began were decided at its first pass, from what the site knew then, not as of their seventh day. Contradicted means its place lay outside the area the other reports agree on and none agreed with it, or the editor set its event aside on review; first to report means no other origin had the event before it. Statements and round-ups are left out.
Each record starts with how many reports it rests on. A rate is given only from 10 decided reports, with its 95% range (the bar: the shaded part is the range, the line the rate). Under 30 reports it is marked Small sample and shown fainter: its range is wide, and a few more reports can move it a lot. Compare two sources by their ranges, not only their rates.

How independence is decided
Shared agencies, syndication, affiliates, reposts, and what is not caught
- What counts as another origin?
- Each report is traced back to the first party it can be traced to: the outlet or account itself when it reports on its own, or the organisation it says the information came from. Reports traced to the same origin count once. The attribution is read from the text by the extraction step, an AI model, and can be wrong; the grouping that follows is done by fixed rules in the site's code, not by AI. A report also counts as picked up when a sensor reading or an authority's record (a UKMTO notice, an airspace closure notice, an air-raid alert) is strongly linked to its event.
- Two publishers citing the same agency
- When a report says its information comes from a named organisation (Reuters, AP, AFP, a ministry, an army, an armed group), that organisation is its origin, not the publisher. Two papers that both cite Reuters are one origin, and so are outlets that all relay what the IDF or Hezbollah said. Reports that cite only “local sources”, “witnesses” or “security sources” keep their own outlet as origin, since nothing ties them together.
- Syndicated articles
- The same article reached twice counts once: the same web address, one linking to the other, the same text, or headlines at least 90% alike. Sites that re-host other outlets' copy (marked “Re-hosts other outlets' copy”) are weighed as the outlet they name (“By Reuters”) and count as that origin; when they name none, they count as the re-hosting site itself, rated as such (usually Anonymous).
- Affiliated outlets
- Every name of one publisher is one publisher: Al Jazeera English and Al Jazeera Arabic are both Al Jazeera, and a feed the site reads directly is the same origin as that publisher's articles found through Google News. Two channels or accounts of one organisation are one origin when both are known to be it. Articles found through Google News count as their publisher, never as Google News.
- Telegram reposts
- A forwarded Telegram post is set aside as a copy before it is read when the post it forwards, or another forward of it, came through in the last 72 hours. Later than that, a forward still carries the original's text, and reports in one event with the same text count as one origin. A channel that pastes the same text without the forward mark is caught the same way: the texts must match once punctuation, links, @names and #tags are removed, from 30 characters.
- Copied X posts
- A repost or a quote of an X post is set aside as a copy when that post, or another repost of it, came through in the last 72 hours. Later than that, a repost carries the same text and counts as one origin with the post. A post that copies another's text word for word is caught as on Telegram.
- What is not caught
- Outlets that rewrite one wire story in their own words without naming it, with a different headline, count as separate origins. So do translations and paraphrases of another's post, and outlets owned by one group or speaking for one side under different names (the side label shows this, but the pickup rate does not use it). A relay channel that reposts others' reports without saying whose counts as its own origin; the map shows an event resting only on such posts as a lead, but its record here does not leave them out. Each of these can raise a source's pickup rate.
